How is 'diversity' addressesed in Brussels Police Forces?
Over the past decade, Brussels demographic reality has undergone significant changes. As a ’super-diverse‘ city (Geldof, 2019), Brussels faces major social challenges, including the representation of ethnic minorities within key institutions such as the police. While a democratic police force should ideally reflect the society it serves, research shows that the Belgian police still struggles to integrate ethnic diversity within its ranks. This affects not only the functioning of the police but also its legitimacy and public trust (De Kimpe, 2018; Schuermans, 2021).
This research project, a collaboration between Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), examines the strengths, limitations, and challenges in implementing diversity policies and initiatives within the Brussels police.
On this website, you will find a cartography of diversity initiatives within the different Brussels police districts, specifically focusing on the policy analysis conducted by the VUB team. This overview provides a snapshot of current diversity policies and initiatives, based on in-depth research and a participatory approach with the actors involved.
